Infamous question: How did Kessler get his power?

Spoiler Alert: I know that Kessler is Cole from the future, but I don't recall it explaining how the future cole, Kessler, got his electricity powers. Maybe it could of been a time paradox or something? Unless he experimented with the ray sphere himself and started a family afterward. Any idea?
