Should I ask him to Sadie Hawkins?

I've recently started liking this older guy. We've know each other since the beginning of the year. He's two years older then me, and we have a mutual crush on each other. Yes, I realize crush sounds immature. I was debating on if I should ask him or not. I was going to use an inside joke of ours...but I'm not sure If I should. Considering the age difference, and the fact that I'm sure tons of other girl are going to ask him. I'm not exactly the most outgoing person...and I'm not sure If he'd most definitely say yes to me. I don't really want to ruin anything...what should I do?!
